Easy Crochet Infinity Scarf Pattern (Ribbed, Chunky Yarn)

A scarf is the first thing most crocheters finish, and the most common reason they stop is that the sides drift. One row has 24 stitches, the next 23, the next 26, and the scarf looks like a river. This pattern fixes that with a single stitch count you can check at the end of every row.
What the scarf is
It is a ribbed half double crochet scarf worked flat and seamed into a loop. Because every row works into the back loop only, the fabric looks like knit ribbing, and because the loop has no ends, it stays put when you are carrying a toddler and a school bag.
What is inside the PDF

- Three widths: Narrow (6 in, 18 stitches), Medium (8 in, 24 stitches) and Wide (10 in, 30 stitches).
- A gauge, a yarn list for chunky weight, the row count for each length and a tracking table with lengths at 50, 100 and 150 rows.

- A troubleshooting table.
Three samples from the pattern
The foundation. For the Medium scarf, chain 25. Row 1: hdc in the 2nd chain from the hook and in each chain across, giving 24 hdc. Chain 1, turn. The pattern tells you the turning chain never counts, which is the other common reason scarves narrow.
The row. Row 2: hdc BLO in each stitch across, 24 hdc. Repeat for 203 rows. That is it. The stitch count box reminds you to count the first and last stitch, which are the ones people miss.
The seam. Cut a 36 inch tail, line up the two short ends, and whipstitch one stitch per hdc across. The seam should have exactly 24 stitches. If it has 25, you added a stitch somewhere, and the pattern tells you how to find it.
What you need
About 250 yards of chunky yarn for the Medium (190 for Narrow, 310 for Wide), a 6.5 mm (US K-10.5) hook, a tapestry needle and scissors.
Why I like it
It is an hour of crochet per 25 rows, it uses up a single skein of a favorite color, and it makes a decent gift. I have made one in cream, one in rust and one in forest green, and the family now fights over the green.
