Free Chunky Knit Throw Blanket Pattern for Beginners

Free Chunky Knit Throw Blanket Pattern for Beginners

I taught my daughter to knit on a blanket like this one. She was nine, it was raining, and I needed something with no shaping, no tricky stitches and no way to get lost. Three weekends later she had a throw on the sofa that she still will not let anyone else use.

That is the pattern I am giving you for free. It is a chunky seed stitch throw in super bulky yarn, 40 by 50 inches as written, and it is the first pattern in my library because it teaches the habits every other pattern depends on: swatch first, count your stitches, check your gauge.

The problem with most beginner blankets

Most free blanket patterns assume you already know how to read a pattern. They say "work in pattern" and leave you guessing. This one does not. The PDF has a full page called How to read this pattern that explains gauge, brackets, repeats and the shaded stitch count boxes, and every section ends with a box that tells you exactly how many stitches should be on your needle.

What is inside the 9 page PDF

  • A welcome page and contents, then the how-to-read page.
  • Materials, gauge and a four-size chart: baby (41 sts), lap (61 sts), throw (81 sts) and large throw (101 sts).
  • Cast on, the one-row stitch repeat, a row tracker with length milestones, joining a new skein, bind off, weaving in ends and blocking.
  • A care page with a fix table, and a yarn-math page that tells you how many skeins to buy for 110, 220 or 300 yard skeins.

Three things you will find on the pages

The size math is shown. For the throw you cast on 81 stitches. At 8 stitches per 4 inches that is 2 stitches per inch, so 81 divided by 2 gives about 40.5 inches wide. At 14 rows per 4 inches, 176 rows divided by 3.5 gives 50.3 inches long. If you want a lap blanket, you can do the same sum yourself.

The stitch is one row. Because the cast on is an odd number, every row is the same: k1, [p1, k1] to end. Look at the stitch below the one on your needle. If it looks like a bump, knit it. If it looks like a V, purl it. That is the whole trick.

A swatch is built in. Cast on 17 stitches, work 20 rows, lay it flat and measure. More than 8 stitches per 4 inches? Go up a needle size. Fewer? Go down. Five minutes of knitting saves a blanket that is two inches too narrow.

What you need

About 1,200 yards of super bulky yarn (6 skeins of a 220 yard blanket yarn), a 12 mm (US 17) circular needle long enough to hold the weight, a tapestry needle and a stitch marker. That is all.
