Granny Stripe Throw Crochet Pattern (Lap and Throw Sizes)

Granny Stripe Throw Crochet Pattern (Lap and Throw Sizes)

My first big crochet project was a granny stripe blanket, and I have made six since. It is the most forgiving blanket I know: every row is the same, you change color every two rows, and when you put it down for a week you pick it back up without re-reading anything.

The problem with most granny stripe patterns

They give a foundation chain and a one-line row, and leave you to work out the rest. If you start in the wrong gap, the whole edge goes crooked. This PDF writes the row out in full, explains what a gap is, and gives a stitch count box so you know on Row 1 whether you are right.

What is inside

  • A 6 page printable PDF.
  • Two sizes: Lap (40 x 48 in) and Throw (about 50 x 56 in), in worsted yarn with five colors.
  • A materials page with the math, a stripe sequence table, a color change tutorial and a progress table.
  • A two-round border with exact stitch totals and a troubleshooting table.

Three samples from the pattern

The foundation. The chain is 3 times the number of clusters plus 4. For the Lap, 3 x 50 + 4 = 154. For the Throw, 3 x 62 + 4 = 190. Row 1 then gives you 151 (or 187) double crochets, which is also a quick check on your first row.

The row. Work 2 dc in the first gap, then 3 dc in each following gap, ending with a dc in the top of the turning chain. Every row has the same number of clusters, so after Row 2 you can compare your count to the first.

The stripes. A, B, C, D, E, two rows each, a ten row repeat. The Lap is 6 repeats (60 rows), the Throw is 7 (70 rows). The pattern shows exactly how to change color on the last dc of the second row.

What you need

About 1,400 yards of worsted yarn for the Lap (280 yards of each of five colors) or 2,050 yards for the Throw (410 of each), a 5.5 mm (US I-9) hook, a tapestry needle and stitch markers.

Choosing colors

Pick one light neutral, one deep neutral and three accents. Lay the skeins side by side in daylight before you start. If two colors look the same when you squint, replace one.
