Moss Stitch Baby Blanket Knitting Pattern (2 Sizes)

When a friend has a baby I knit a blanket, because a blanket is the thing she will actually use at three in the morning. This moss stitch one is my favorite to give. It looks the same on both sides, it lies flat, and the texture hides the little mistakes that come with knitting during a child's naptime.
The problem with baby blanket patterns
Many are either plain stockinette that curls, or lace that is hard to wash. Moss stitch with a garter border does not curl and does not catch tiny fingers. It is also a pattern with no shaping, so you can knit it in front of a movie.
What is inside
- A 6 page printable PDF.
- Two sizes: Stroller (100 sts, about 28.5 x 32 in) and Crib (120 sts, about 34.5 x 40 in).
- Materials, gauge (14 sts and 24 rows = 4 in), yardage and the math for both sizes.
- Border, moss stitch body and top border written row by row, a row counter with milestones, blocking, care and a troubleshooting table.
Three samples from the pattern
The cast on math. Cast on 5 border stitches at each side plus an even number of moss stitches: 5 + 90 + 5 = 100 for the Stroller and 5 + 110 + 5 = 120 for the Crib. At 14 stitches per 4 inches, 100 stitches is 28.6 inches.
The moss rows. Rows 1 and 2: K5, [k1, p1] 45 times, k5. Rows 3 and 4: K5, [p1, k1] 45 times, k5. Repeat 44 times for the Stroller (56 for the Crib). The pattern explains the tip I use: a knit above a purl and a purl above a knit.
The row counter. The Stroller needs 192 rows: 8 garter rows, 176 moss rows, 8 garter rows. The Crib needs 240. A table gives the row where the top border begins (184 and 232), so you know when to switch.
What you need
About 500 yards of soft bulky yarn for the Stroller and 750 for the Crib, a 6 mm (US 10) circular needle at 32 inches or longer, a tapestry needle and a tape measure.
Safety note
The blanket is meant for strollers, car seats and playtime. Please do not leave a blanket in a baby's sleep space.
