Slouchy Ribbed Beanie Knitting Pattern (3 Sizes)

Slouchy Ribbed Beanie Knitting Pattern (3 Sizes)

Every winter I knit a stack of hats, and every winter one child loses one. The slouchy ribbed beanie is the pattern I go back to because it takes one skein, it stretches to fit more than one head, and the loss hurts less when it only took an afternoon.

The problem with a lot of hat patterns

Hat patterns often give one size and a vague "adjust to fit". Then the crown goes wrong, the top is pointy and the whole thing takes three tries. This pattern gives three sizes with a size chart, the stitch count to expect after every decrease round, and a crown that gathers cleanly instead of coming to a point.

What is inside

  • A 6 page printable PDF.
  • Materials, gauge and a size chart: Child (84 sts, 16.8 in), Adult S/M (100 sts, 20 in) and Adult L (112 sts, 22.4 in).
  • Round-by-round instructions for the cast on, the 2x2 rib body and the crown.
  • A pom pom guide, care notes and a troubleshooting table.

Three samples from the pattern

The math behind the sizes. At a gauge of 20 stitches per 4 inches in rib, circumference is stitches divided by 5. 100 divided by 5 is 20 inches for the adult S/M. Every cast on number is divisible by 4 so the k2, p2 rib repeats exactly with no fudging.

The rib. Rnd 1: [k2, p2] around. Repeat until the hat is 7 (8.5) [9] inches from the cast on, about 49 (60) [63] rounds. There is no other body pattern to track, which makes it good television knitting.

The crown. Decrease round: [k2tog, p2tog] around, leaving 42 (50) [56] stitches, exactly half your cast on. Work three rounds of [k1, p1]. Then k2tog around to 21 (25) [28] stitches, cut the yarn, thread it through twice and pull tight. Because the rib stays aligned through the decrease, there is no jog and no hole.

What you need

About 150 yards of worsted yarn for the adult S/M, a 5 mm (US 8) circular needle and double points or a long circular for the crown, a stitch marker and a tapestry needle. A pom pom maker is optional.

Who this is for

It is for beginners who can knit and purl and want to try knitting in the round, and for experienced knitters who want a quick gift. If you can count to four, you can knit it.
