Textured Crochet Dishcloth Set Pattern (4 Stitch Patterns)

Dishcloths are the best way to learn a stitch. They are small, they use cotton you already have, and when you finish one you get to use it the same day. This set gives you four different textures in four small squares, so you can learn a new stitch every evening for a week.

The problem with a lot of dishcloth patterns

Many give only one stitch or hide the stitch count. The edges wander and the cloth ends up a rectangle. Each cloth here has a stitch count check on every row and a border table with exact totals, so you finish a square that is square.

Three samples from the pattern

Ribbed single crochet. Chain 33. Row 1: sc in the 2nd chain from the hook and in each chain across, 32 sc. Row 2: sc BLO across, 32 sc. Repeat to 36 rows. At 16 sc per 4 inches, 32 sc is 8 inches wide and 36 rows at 18 rows per 4 inches is 8 inches tall.

Moss stitch. Chain 33. Sc in the 3rd chain from the hook, then ch 1, skip 1, sc across to give 16 sc and 15 chain spaces. Every following row repeats that count, so you always know where you are.

Puff stitch. Chain 34, work a base row of 33 sc, then alternate a puff row (sc, puff, sc, puff, ending with a sc, giving 17 sc and 16 puffs) with a plain sc row of 33. The pattern shows how to make the puff: three loops in the same stitch, pull through all 7, chain 1 to lock it.

What you need

About 220 yards of 100% cotton worsted yarn for the whole set, a 5 mm (US H-8) hook, a tapestry needle and scissors.

A word on cotton

Cotton does not stretch, so crochet it a little firmer than wool. Wash the finished cloths in hot water once before using them: they shrink about 5%, soften and become more absorbent.
